Today, 8th of March 2021 is International Women’s Day.
This day is globally recorgnised as one of the most important days of the year as we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
Marked annually, the 8th day in the month of March is set aside to celebrate women’s achievements as well as raise awareness about women’s equality worldwide.
The significance of this day is the beauty of having group of women all over the world come together to celebrate women’s achievements.
The campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2021 is “Choose To Challenge”.
As we all know, a challenged world is an alert world. And from challenges comes the change that we desire. So let us Choose to Challenge.
History has it that the International Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century. The first gathering was held in the year 1911.
The International Women’s Day is not country, group, nor organization based.
Infact, no government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub is responsible for the IWD.
The day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.
A world- renowned feminist, journalist and activist, Gloria Steinem once explained that “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist, nor to any one organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights”.
So I admonish every woman to make it a special day and make a positive impact that would make a difference for women.
One more thing to note about the IWD is the colours that symbolizes the day.
Purple, Green and White are the colours that represents the International Women’s.
While Purple signifies Justice & Dignity, Green symbolizes Hope, and White represents Purity.
With a touch of any of these colours, step out with your heads up high and have for yourself, a Happy International Women’s Day.
Remember the hashtag #ChooseToChallenge
